Powering Translational Research and Entrepreneurship for Women Scientists

Interview with first cohort of interns

1. Kriti Shankar

What was their expectation from the program and whether they could achieve it?

I came into this internship wanting to understand how translational research works and to learn from mentors. The chance to dive into vaccine and stem cell research was particularly exciting for me—it was a unique opportunity. Throughout the internship, I got a better understanding of presenting research findings, thanks to our weekly presentations. On top of all that, I even got some insights into how I could start my own business in this field. Now that the internship is almost over, I can say with confidence that I have achieved everything I set out to do.

How do they plan to use of this internship?

I plan to use my knowledge and skills in vaccine and stem cell research for future work in this field. As a biotech fresher, I will build on the experiences gained during this internship to advance my career, pursuing translational research and entrepreneurship opportunities

What they will say to future applicants.

To all future applicants, I would like to share that this is an incredible opportunity to gain knowledge about translational research, including stem cells and vaccines, and to benefit from the mentorship provided by Dr. Uday Sir and professionals in this field. Additionally, applicants can learn how to design and execute an experiment and gain an understanding of industrial research in the biotech industry. I highly recommend that you seize this chance to acquire diverse experiences and knowledge that can significantly impact your future endeavors. Do not let this incredible opportunity slip away!

What was their expectation from the program and whether they could achieve it.

In my recent internship, I embarked on an enriching journey that significantly expanded my knowledge in vaccine and stem cell research. This experience was pivotal, offering me a practical framework to design and implement scientific experiments, which is a cornerstone of my professional growth.

Beyond the acquisition of technical skills, the internship served as a comprehensive platform for understanding the dynamics of industrial research within the biotechnological sector. It introduced me to the essential qualities of an industrial researcher, emphasizing the importance of entrepreneurial thinking. This aspect was particularly highlighted through my participation in various talk series, which honed my ability to communicate complex scientific concepts effectively.Furthermore, the internship provided a deep dive into translational research, illustrating the seamless transition of laboratory findings to clinical applications.

How do they plan to use this internship

Entering the biotechnology profession as a newcomer, this internship has equipped me with a well-rounded skill set, blending practical experience with a solid theoretical foundation and enhanced communication abilities. The insights gained from this experience have laid a robust groundwork for my career, preparing me to contribute effectively to the field of biotechnology and to pursue my passion for making tangible impacts in healthcare through scientific research.

What they will say to future applicants

To future applicants, I would say: Embrace this opportunity with an open mind and a hunger to learn. This internship is not just a stepping stone; it’s a launch pad into the complex and rewarding world of biotechnology. You will be immersed in an environment that challenges you to apply theoretical knowledge practically, pushing the boundaries of what you thought possible. Engage fully with the projects, especially in areas like vaccine and stem cell research, as these experiences are rare and invaluable. I want to thank our mentor Dr. Uday Saxena for the great opportunity.

Take advantage of the chance to learn from seasoned industrial researchers and entrepreneurs. Their insights can offer a new perspective on how to navigate the biotech industry successfully. Participating in talk series and discussions will not only enhance your communication skills but also expand your network within the biotech community.

3. TK Deepshikha

What was their expectation from the program and whether they could achieve it?

Hi I am Deepshikha. I got to know about IEFR from a LinkedIn post. I thought if I get this internship, I’ll get some experience and I can go for a job. But after I landed here, not only the hands-on experience, but also I got to know about lab activities and experiments starting from planning the procedure, ordering chemicals and optimization of protocols. Now I feel I’m capable of handling a project on my own. When compared to what I expected, I gained a lot of knowledge. I get to know things, which I didn’t know before. I achieved more than I expected.

How do they plan to use this internship?

I have a plan to do a PhD in the future. After finishing my graduation, I wanted to take a break. I used this opportunity to get real time experience on projects and how to approach a guide for guidance. This opportunity also paved the way for entering into industry, which is difficult for a  fresher. I’m very much thankful  to Dr. Uday Saxena and the IEFR team.

What they will say to future applicants.

Hello my dear future applicants, If you want to Kickstart your career in the life sciences domain you landed in a good place. Here, not only you gain knowledge about experiments, you also get real time meetings with successful personalities mainly women through ‘Her story’ chat series interaction session.  Wherever you go, they ask for experience even though they know you’re a fresher. But here they are expecting  enthusiastic  freshers .  They believe in women empowerment. If you are cooperative, you’ll be in a good position in the future. Hard work always pays.
