🧪 About the Fellowship

The CSIR–Nehru Science Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Scheme identifies and supports promising young PhDs with innovative ideas in basic science, engineering, medicine, and agriculture. Fellows work in one of CSIR’s 37 state-of-the-art laboratories, gaining access to world-class research facilities while transitioning from mentored to independent research careers.

Every year, 100 fresh PhD holders are selected to work on cutting-edge projects in niche areas, contributing to India’s scientific progress.


✅ Eligibility

You can apply if you:

  • Hold a PhD (within 3 years of award) or have submitted your thesis
  • Have publications in high-impact SCI journals
  • Are an Indian national, PIO, OCI, or foreign national (up to 20% of fellowships reserved for non-Indians)
  • Are under 32 years old (age relaxation: +5 years for SC/ST/PH/Women, +3 years for OBC-NCL)

📌 Note: You cannot apply to the CSIR lab where you earned your PhD.


💰 Fellowship Benefits

  • ₹80,000/month consolidated pay
  • HRA as per CSIR rules
  • ₹3 lakh/year contingency grant (25% usable for travel)
  • Medical benefits as per CSIR Research Associate rules
  • Possible accommodation in CSIR labs (subject to availability)
  • Performance-based lump sum bonus (20% of fellowship at end of each year)

📅 Selection Process

  • Apply anytime; selections happen twice yearly (June & December)
  • Applications must be routed through a sponsoring CSIR laboratory
  • Candidates present their proposed research, followed by an interview
  • Foreign applicants may be considered in absentia
