Women scientists leading India’s Research & Innovation STEMM Empowerment (RISE)
When India’s young women set out to pursue STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), the numbers look promising — 43% of students in STEMM are women. But as they climb higher, the support thins out. Only 27% remain in the STEMM workforce, and fewer than 1 in 10 reach leadership positions. This “leaky pipeline” costs not just women, but India’s scientific future.
The India RISE Fellowship is here to change that.
Backed by the U.S.-India Alliance for Women’s Economic Empowerment and led by Johns Hopkins University’s Gupta-Klinsky India Institute (GKII) alongside Indian partners, the India RISE Fellowship is a 12-month part-time program designed for early-career women scientists. Each year, ~40 exceptional fellows will gain advanced research training, personalized mentorship, and leadership development — all while continuing their institutional roles.
Empowering Women Scientists at a Critical Career Stage
Applications Open for India RISE Fellowships
Expression of Interest Deadline (Invite Only): Sept. 15, 11:59 p.m. IST
Why it matters
As India moves toward its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, unlocking the potential of women in STEMM isn’t just fair — it’s strategic. Women-led research drives fresh perspectives, bold innovation, and stronger institutions. With momentum from the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and NEP 2020, India RISE will serve as a launchpad for women who can lead globally and inspire locally.
What fellows can expect
- Cutting-edge research training in proposal writing, ethics, and scientific communication.
- Leadership masterclasses with experts from India and Hopkins.
- Personalized mentorship through a unique triad model.
- Capstone projects aligned with India’s STEMM priorities.
- Access to a supportive peer network that lasts beyond the fellowship.
Fellows will also have the chance to compete for a $50,000 research grant challenge, and gain visibility through global platforms.
Applications & Selection
The first cohort will be announced in December 2025. Participation is through an invitation-only process with leading institutions across India, and is not open for unsolicited applications.
But the fellowship is more than just a program — it’s a movement to ensure India’s brightest women scientists don’t just stay in the field, but lead it.
