How Technology Is Preventing Human–Elephant Conflict

Nature vs Tech: How Modern Technology Is Preventing Human–Elephant Conflict in Hosur

Every year, large elephant herds migrate into Hosur from the adjoining Bannerghatta National Park and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary, often crossing into the forest–agriculture interface of Jawlagiri and Denkanikottai, leading to conflict. This is one of the toughest seasons for elephants, local communities, and Forest Department staff. The region has witnessed serious conflict incidents in the past — but this year, the response is smarter, faster, and safer.

Thermal Drones: A Breakthrough in Real-Time Conflict Prevention

Among several interventions, the use of a customized Thermal Drone for continuous monitoring is proving to be a game-changer.

  • The drone provides real-time visuals of moving elephant herds.
  • Forest teams can now detect herds much earlier.
  • Nearly 50% of herds are guided back towards interior forest zones before they approach human habitations.
  • Early detection has prevented accidental encounters, protected field staff, and more than doubled the efficiency of ensuring safe elephant passage.

Ground Teams Working Through the Night

On the ground, 20 anti-depredation teams operate through the night, coordinating with drone operators and field guards.

This effort is complemented by the phased installation of steel wire-rope fencing across a 200 km forest boundary. Many major conflict corridors in the Jawlagiri sector have already been secured.

Despite this, elephants occasionally enter open areas. When they do, Forest teams ensure:

  • People are kept at a safe distance
  • Panic is prevented
  • Elephants are allowed undisturbed, safe passage

Smarter Coexistence Through Technology and Teamwork

This year’s operations show how technology + teamwork + dedicated field staff can transform conflict management. Hosur is emerging as a model for smarter coexistence between humans and wildlife.

Kudos to the Tamil Nadu Forest team led by @jagdishbakanIFS for pioneering these efforts.
