🌍 ICGEB SMART Fellowship

Programme: Short-term Mobility and Research Training (SMART) Fellowship

🎯 Aim

The ICGEB SMART Fellowship promotes mobility among researchers from ICGEB Member States, aiming to enhance skill development,
facilitate hands-on training, and encourage bilateral cooperation in science and technology.
The programme requires strong collaboration between the home and receiving laboratories.

🔬 Subject Area

All areas of the Life Sciences.

✅ Eligibility

  • Open to nationals of ICGEB Member States.
  • Scientists in early career stages (MSc, PhD students, or PhD holders within 5 years).
  • Actively working at a research institution in an ICGEB Member State.
  • Willing to spend 3–9 months at a host institution in another Member State.
  • No age limit, but preference is given to young scientists.

📜 Terms & Benefits

  • Duration: Minimum 3 months, maximum 9 months.
  • Fellowship includes:
    • International economy return travel
    • Health insurance
    • Monthly stipend: US$ 800 – US$ 1,500 (based on location and seniority)
    • Bench fee: Up to US$ 500/month, transferred to the host lab
  • Note: No financial or administrative support for family members.

🧪 Bench Fee Usage

The bench fee must be used exclusively for consumables related to the Fellow’s research (e.g., reagents, labware, culture consumables).
Not allowed: Equipment purchase, software, travel, stationery, admin costs, or maintenance.

📝 Selection Criteria

  • Scientific merit of the project
  • Quality of candidate’s CV
  • Impact on the applicant’s career and home/host labs
  • Quality of infrastructure and collaboration between labs
  • Bonus: Additional support from the host lab (housing, stipend, etc.)

📂 Application Guidelines

  1. Submit online via the ICGEB portal.
  2. Only one application per candidate per call.
  3. Upload the following documents:
    • Full CV (yourself)
    • Full CV of Receiving Lab Head (with publications)
    • Valid ID (preferably passport, valid for 12 months minimum)
  4. Ensure both Home and Receiving Lab Heads complete confirmation via the email link (auto-sent by the system).

📘 Final Report

  • Joint scientific report by Fellow and host supervisor after completion.
  • Financial statement from the host lab on bench fee utilization.
