Career Konnect Interview

Q1. Kirthana, you have completed your B.Tech, M.Tech, and PhD in India and also pursued postdoctoral research abroad. Could you tell us about your educational journey and experiences before transitioning into industry?

Kirthana:
It has been a wonderful journey filled with knowledge and diverse experiences. From my B.Tech through my postdoctoral research, I gained rich exposure that helped me evolve both scientifically and professionally.

I began with a B.Tech in Biotechnology at SJC, Mysore, which gave me a strong foundation in biology and life sciences. I then wanted to specialize further, so I pursued an M.Tech in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at VIT, Vellore. Initially, I aimed for Biotechnology, but my merit rank led me to Pharmaceutical Chemistry—and in hindsight, it turned out to be the right decision.

During my master’s, I gained a deep understanding of the pharmaceutical industry workflow, especially in small molecule drug discovery and development. For my final-year project, I had the opportunity to work at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. That experience exposed me to cutting-edge research, interactions with PhD scholars and scientists, journal clubs, and technical talks, which strongly motivated me to pursue research further.

I then completed my PhD at JNCASR, Bangalore. Following that, I pursued postdoctoral research, which is a common path after a PhD. However, I was always clear that I wanted to transition into industry. My research experience gave me a strong foundation and helped me secure a good position in the industry.

Q2. What was the application process like for your postdoc at UCSF?

Kirthana:
The postdoc application process typically involves either applying to open positions or directly reaching out to principal investigators (PIs) whose research aligns with your interests.

In my case, I directly contacted a PI at UCSF. During my PhD, I worked on malaria, so I highlighted my skills in molecular biology and cell biology and expressed my interest in joining the lab.

The selection process involved three rounds of interviews:

  • The first round focused on understanding my interests and alignment with the lab.
  • The second round was more technical, discussing my skills and potential contributions.
  • The final stage confirmed my selection.

However, this success came after persistence—I had sent nearly 100 applications to labs across different countries and received responses for about six interviews. Ultimately, I secured the position at UCSF.

Q3. How did you transition from being a scientist to a business role?

Kirthana:
This was indeed a transformative transition. During my time at UCSF in San Francisco—a major startup hub—I was exposed not only to science but also to business and entrepreneurship.

I observed how entrepreneurs pitch ideas and bring them to market. This exposure sparked my interest in the business side of science.

Later, when I joined the industry as a scientist, I gained further insights into how companies operate—how products are positioned, marketed, and delivered to customers.

To transition into a business role, I focused on:

  • Building business-related skills alongside my scientific expertise
  • Networking to understand available opportunities
  • Identifying roles that aligned with my interests and strengths

This combination of skills, exposure, and planning helped me successfully move into a strategic business role.

Q4. What is the best way to secure an internship or job in this industry?

Kirthana:
Internships are often the first step toward entering the industry. Based on my experience, here are some key approaches:

  • Regularly check company websites and LinkedIn for opportunities
  • Reach out directly to companies expressing your interest
  • Clearly identify the area you want to work in
  • Develop at least theoretical knowledge, if not practical experience
  • Leverage your network to learn about openings

Being proactive and consistent in your efforts is crucial.

Q5. Could you share your interview experience at Merck Life Science when transitioning into a business role?

Kirthana:
I went through three rounds of interviews at Merck:

  • First Round: Focused on my background, skills, and interest in the role
  • Second Round: A mix of scientific and business evaluation—how my expertise could contribute to the role
  • Final Round: A discussion with the country manager to assess alignment with the organization’s vision and strategy

This final round was more behavioral and focused on cultural fit and long-term alignment.

Q6. What are the top three skills from your PhD or scientific career that have helped you in your business role?

Kirthana:
Three key skills have been instrumental:

  1. Core Skills (Scientific + Business):
Strong domain knowledge forms the foundation of any role.
  2. Communication:
Both verbal and written communication are critical. Whether explaining science or presenting business strategies, clarity is essential.
  3. Commitment and Patience:
Research teaches resilience. Handling failures and staying committed to long-term goals is invaluable in any career.

Q7. How does your weekly work as a Senior Strategic Manager differ from that of a scientist?

Kirthana:
The roles are quite different:

  • Scientist Role:
Focused on research and development—conducting experiments, developing products, and improving their effectiveness.
  • Business Role:
Focused on strategy—deciding how products are positioned in the market, identifying opportunities, and creating value for customers.

My work involves product strategy, market analysis, customer engagement, and driving business growth.

Q8. You are also a marathon runner and founder of a health and fitness community. How has this influenced you personally and professionally?

Kirthana:
It has been a transformative experience.

  • It has enhanced my creativity, especially in designing fitness programs
  • Improved my people management skills by working with diverse individuals
  • Helped me understand human psychology better
  • Given me immense satisfaction by contributing to society and promoting healthier lifestyles

Transforming non-runners into marathon runners is challenging but deeply rewarding.

Q9. What advice would you give to students considering a PhD?

Kirthana:
I would suggest three important steps:

  1. Self-Evaluation:
Understand your interests and whether you are truly motivated to pursue a PhD.
  2. Research the Right Lab:
Identify labs, PIs, and research areas carefully. Learn about the lab environment and alumni outcomes.
  3. Be Prepared for Commitment:
A PhD requires long-term dedication. Ensure it aligns with your future career goals.

Being clear about your trajectory is essential before making this decision.
