Imagine a young biotech startup in India with a breakthrough idea—say, a microbial strain that can turn waste into green fuel. The science is ready, the ambition is high, but the challenge is clear: where do they find the advanced labs, fermenters, and pilot facilities needed to scale?
To solve this, the Government of India has launched a network of 21 integrated biotechnology centres across the country. These shared facilities are designed to help startups, researchers, and companies take their ideas from lab benches to market-ready solutions—without being held back by lack of infrastructure.
Rolled out under the BioE3 Policy (Biotechnology for Environment, Economy and Employment), the network is more than just bricks and machines. It is envisioned as a national platform for advanced biomanufacturing, spanning fields from health and agriculture to food, energy, and environment. From smart proteins and probiotics to next-gen cell and gene therapies, these centres will accelerate innovation, create jobs, and reduce import dependence.
“This is not just infrastructure—it is a transformative ecosystem that reinforces India’s standing as a global bioeconomy leader,” said Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science & Technology. He emphasized that by aligning with Atmanirbhar Bharat and climate goals, India is laying the foundation for a multi-trillion-dollar bioeconomy by 2047.
Startups, academia, and industries will now have access to biofoundries—automated facilities that speed up the design, construction, and testing of biological systems. From Bengaluru to Mumbai and Pune, new hubs are already coming up in partnership with industry leaders like Tata Chemicals and innovative biotech firms, covering areas from specialty chemicals to gene therapy vectors.
By tackling the biggest bottleneck—scaling technologies from the lab to pilot and commercial stages—this initiative promises to make India a frontrunner in global biomanufacturing, while opening new avenues for exports and global partnerships.
