IIT Madras startup reimagining the future of healthcare

IIT Madras incubated ISMO Bio-Photonics is reimagining the future of healthcare, starting as research at IIT Madras to a startup at IIT Madras Research Park. Founded by 32-year-old Ikram Khan during the pandemic, ISMO builds on his work in ultrafast lasers, microfluidics, and collaborations with MIT on brain organoids. Partnering with co-founder Dr. Shantanu Pradhan, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Biotechnology, IIT Madras, the venture is developing human-on-chip technologies that replicate real human responses, promising faster, cheaper, and more reliable drug testing.

Backed by the IIT Madras incubation cell (@IITMIC), national innovation platforms like CCAMP, CIIC, BIRAC, Startup India, and funding by Mr Kris Gopalkrishnan, Co-founder of Infosys, ISMO is focusing on breakthrough applications in drug screening, personalised cancer therapies, and IVF solutions.

With a small but specialised team of 8–9 experts, the startup plans to bring these technologies to market in the next 3–5 years, working closely with pharma and healthcare organisations.
