FDA’s Action Levels for Lead in Baby Food: Safeguarding Young Lives
Guidance Document/FDA/Jan 9, 2025 — The FDA has issued new guidance to reduce lead levels in processed foods for babies and young children. This aligns with the agency’s Closer to Zero initiative, aiming to minimize toxic elements in food over time.
Key Highlights:
- Purpose: Protect children under two from lead exposure in foods like purees, cereals, and more.
- Action Levels:
- 10 ppb: Fruits, vegetables (except root veggies), mixtures, yogurts, custards, and meats.
- 20 ppb: Single-ingredient root vegetables and dry infant cereals.
- Not Legally Binding: Recommendations for industry to ensure food safety and public health.
- Parental Guidance: Emphasizes varied, nutrient-rich diets for optimal child development.
“The FDA’s guidance for industry is a major step in our commitment to driving down dietary exposure to contaminants like lead in foods intended for babies and young children to as low as possible while maintaining access to nutritious food,” said FDA Deputy Commissioner for Human Foods Jim Jones.
