Q1. Debakshi, could you walk us through your academic journey and how it shaped your career?

I began my academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree from St. Aloysius College in Bangalore, followed by a Master’s in Biotechnology from VIT, Vellore. Early on, I gained exposure to industry through a short stint at Biocon Pharmaceuticals, which helped me understand applied research.

I was particularly interested in clinically relevant research, especially malaria biology. During my time at NCBS Bangalore, I worked on malaria-related research, which further strengthened my interest in pursuing a PhD. Around that time, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) was emerging as a powerful tool in structural biology, and I became interested in combining my passion for infectious disease research with structural biology techniques.

This led me to pursue a PhD at the Weizmann Institute of Science, where I worked on projects integrating malaria biology and cryo-EM. My approach was very targeted—I reached out directly to potential supervisors and aligned my research interests with available projects, which played a key role in securing the position.


Q2. What motivated your transition from academia to industry?

I have always been inclined toward industrial research because of its fast-paced nature and the tangible outcomes it delivers. Industry research directly contributes to developing drugs and therapies that impact human health, which I find very motivating.

After completing my PhD, I pursued a postdoctoral position at the Diamond Light Source and the University of Oxford. However, when the opportunity at GSK came up, it aligned perfectly with my interests in structural biology and drug discovery, prompting my transition into industry.


Q3. What does a structural biologist do in a pharmaceutical company like GSK?

As a structural biologist, my work involves studying the structure of biological molecules, primarily proteins, and understanding how they interact with other molecules such as drugs or antibodies.

We analyze how these interactions influence biological pathways, particularly those relevant to diseases. This information is crucial for drug discovery, as it helps identify potential targets and design molecules that can effectively interact with them.

The role is highly interdisciplinary, requiring collaboration across teams working in chemistry, biology, and computational sciences.


Q4. What skills are essential for a career in structural biology?

A strong foundation in protein biochemistry is essential. Understanding how proteins function, interact, and respond to different conditions is critical in this field.

In addition, knowledge of broader biological systems is important. For example, understanding how proteins are expressed, folded, and regulated within cells can provide valuable context for structural studies.

Communication skills are equally important, as the role involves collaborating with diverse teams and conveying complex scientific ideas clearly.


Q5. How can students secure internships in companies like GSK?

The best approach is to actively explore company websites, as most organizations have dedicated career portals listing internships, apprenticeships, or industrial placements.

It is important to carefully read job descriptions and identify relevant keywords. Sometimes, opportunities may not be labeled explicitly as “internships,” so being flexible in searching for related roles is helpful.

Regularly checking these platforms and applying strategically can significantly improve your chances.


Q6. How do you maintain work-life balance in a demanding scientific role?

Maintaining work-life balance requires conscious effort. While scientific work can be demanding, it is important to allocate time for personal interests and relaxation.

I make time for activities such as swimming, cooking, and outdoor hobbies like birdwatching and hiking. These activities help me recharge and maintain a healthy balance.

Planning and prioritizing tasks also play a key role in managing both professional and personal commitments effectively.


Q7. Is industry research less scientific compared to academia?

That is a common misconception. Industry research involves a significant amount of scientific work, including experimental design, data analysis, and continuous learning.

The main difference is the pace and structure. Industry research operates within defined timelines and focuses on achieving specific goals, often involving multiple teams working together.

While academia may focus on a single research question for an extended period, industry requires managing multiple projects simultaneously and delivering results efficiently.


Q8. What advice would you give to aspiring scientists?

My advice is to pursue your interests with confidence and determination. Identify what excites you and actively work toward it.

Networking is also important. Platforms like LinkedIn provide opportunities to connect with professionals, learn from their experiences, and explore potential career paths.

Most importantly, stay curious and open to learning. Science is constantly evolving, and being adaptable is key to long-term success.
