🔬 Career Konnect: Job Profile – Research Scientist (Industry)

Featured Scientist: Arusha Acharyya

Current Role: Senior Scientist – Biophysics Division at Merck, USA

Education: PhD in Biophysical Chemistry, University of Pennsylvania | Masters in Chemistry, IIT Kanpur

🔍 Part 1: General Information

Q. What is your current job title and a brief description of your role?
My current role is Senior Scientist in the Biophysics group at Merck. My job is to utilize and develop biophysical techniques and methodologies to probe structure-functions-interactions in biologically relevant molecules. The goal is to understand relevant interactions and mechanisms to support the early-stage drug discovery process.

Q. Which company are you currently working for?
Merck (in USA & Canada, MSD outside)

Q. In which city and country are you based?
Rahway, New Jersey, USA

🎓 Part 2: Career Path and Education

Q. What was your PhD specialization? From which university did you obtain your PhD?
I did my PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania with focus on spectroscopy and microscopy to study structure-function relationships in biological macromolecules in different length scales and timescales.

Q. Could you briefly outline your career path since completing your PhD?
After completing my PhD, I was still unsure whether to pursue industry or academia as I didn’t have much exposure to the industrial workflow. To keep both options open, I joined as a postdoctoral research associate at MIT. My goal was to equip myself with additional expertise and skill sets to make an informed career decision. In Boston, I was also in proximity of different pharma and biotech companies, giving myself more exposure to industrial roles through different seminars and networking events.

Q. How important was your PhD in securing your current position?
Yes, the basic skill sets that I developed during my PhD training focusing on biophysical methodologies involving spectroscopy, microscopy and calorimetry and basic biochemistry knowledge aligned well with the job description of my current role as Senior Scientist. Also, soft skills like communication, presentation and writing skills helped with the job applications.

🧪 Part 3: Job Role and Responsibilities

Q. Could you describe a typical workday for you?
My typical workday is 80% lab work and 20% official work (including meetings, training, and data presentations). My primary responsibility is to support early stages of drug discovery with experiments to QC proteins, interrogating thermodynamics and kinetics of biomolecular interactions to find the best chemical matter that can be developed into a drug candidate. My job is to conduct experiments, analyze data, and convey the results to collaborating teams.

Q. What key skills are essential for your role?
Lab-based technical skill sets: Physical instrumentation (Spectroscopy – Fluorescence, SPR, Calorimetry, Protein biochemistry).
Soft Skills: Scientific communication, Presentation, Writing.

Q. What are the biggest challenges and rewards of your job?
I think the biggest challenge is the fast-paced nature of industrial work. Most of the work is collaborative with multiple teams, coordinating with teams with a wide variety of data to understand a problem is kind of a challenge.
Reward is of course satisfaction from the thought that I am contributing to the science that has the possibility to impact human lives when a drug goes to clinical trials. On a day-to-day scale, positive and novel results from an experiment is also rewarding.

Q. How do you balance your work and personal life?
Although it is not always possible, I try to define work hours and stick to them. This is helped by maintaining a priority to-do list and communicating expectations with my managers and colleagues. I also try to prioritize mindfulness exercise, hobbies, and social time as essential parts of my week.

🚀 Part 4: Future Opportunities

Q. What are the potential career paths and opportunities for someone in your position?
From my position, two most common career tracks are to be in the scientist track (grow as a scientist to a scientific advisor) or to be on the managerial track involving more business acumen.

Q. What are the current trends and challenges in the biotech industry?
In the field of biophysics, a current trend is incorporation of AI and Machine Learning in experiments, data analysis and data handling. AI is significantly speeding up target identification, lead optimization, and personalized medicine. I see biophysics incorporating these tools to fasten drug discovery.

Q. What advice would you give to early-career researchers who are aspiring to work in the biotech industry?
Find the field you are interested in and passionate about and develop the relevant skill sets to an expert’s level. You should always have clear fundamental knowledge about your expertise. Another important part is to build meaningful connections and network with experts in the field. This helps in getting an insider’s idea about the industry and getting good mentorship.

Q. Are there any resources, networks, or training programs that helped you in your career?
Attending company information seminars, getting involved with biotech students’ clubs in the university, Career fairs, Campus recruitment sessions.

💰 Part 5: Salary Insights

Salary range (annual) for freshers: $125,000 – $150,000 depending on location

Salary range (annual) for someone with your experience: $140,000 – $160,000
