In emergency care, controlling bleeding quickly is a critical priority. FIBROPLUG’s journey began with a question: could advanced biomaterials overcome the limitations of conventional bleeding-control dressings? The answer emerged through a collaboration between the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and Fibroheal Woundcare Pvt. Ltd.—bringing scientific expertise and product development together with a shared purpose.
The Concept: Science Designed to Make a Difference
At the heart of FIBROPLUG is a bilayered composite combining chitosan foam with a tissue-facing layer of silk fibroin and silica particles. Chitosan supports clot formation, while the silk–silica interface supports haemostasis and easier dressing removal. Research published in Carbohydrate Polymers in 2023 demonstrated rapid clotting, reduced blood loss and removal without rebleeding, establishing the technology’s scientific foundation. [1]

The IISc–Fibroheal partnership transformed this research into a patented, commercially manufactured external haemostatic dressing. Produced at Fibroheal’s Doddaballapur facility, FIBROPLUG exemplifies how academia–industry collaboration can bring indigenous biomaterial technology into practical emergency-care applications.
The Soldiers: Taking Innovation to the Frontline
Today, FIBROPLUG, a Make in India innovation, has moved beyond the laboratory into real-world healthcare, with reported supply to military field hospitals and availability across military, state and central hospitals. Reportedly used during Operation Sindoor, it reflects FIBROHEAL’S commitment to advancing haemostatic solutions for emergency care and supporting those who serve the nation. Over 5,000 units were supplied to Army hospitals across the Western and Northern Sectors during this critical national operation, reinforcing the role of homegrown innovation in strengthening India’s emergency medical preparedness and self-reliance.
