Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship: Shape the Future of Bio-Innovation

The Biotechnology Regulatory Fellowship is a prestigious six-month, full-time professional development program located in Washington, D.C., hosted by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine through its Committee on Science, Technology, and Law (CSTL). This immersive fellowship is designed to prepare early-career professionals for the evolving challenges in biotechnology regulation.

Why This Fellowship Matters

With emerging biotechnologies challenging existing regulatory frameworks, this program equips fellows with the opportunity to propose forward-looking regulatory strategies and assess futuristic biotech products. Fellows participate in expert-led seminars, perform horizon scanning, and collaborate on capstone projects that propose practical solutions for regulatory challenges.

Key Fellowship Features

  • Full-time, six-month fellowship (37.5 hours/week)
  • Hosted in Washington, D.C. under the National Academies
  • Hands-on mentorship from regulatory experts at USDA, EPA, and FDA
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration with fellows from science, law, and policy backgrounds
  • Engagement in seminars, horizon scanning, and agency-led events

Capstone Projects

Fellows team up to design and implement capstone projects focused on regulatory innovation. Each team will:

  • Select a project with guidance from agency mentors
  • Collaborate across diverse domains (science, law, engineering, medicine, policy)
  • Receive feedback and ideate within the cohort community
  • Present final findings to mentors and federal agency stakeholders

Some projects may also originate from specific agency needs and requests.

Fellowship Benefits

  • Stipend: $70,000 (paid monthly over six months)
  • Participation in exclusive events such as workshops, Congressional briefings, and biotech conferences
  • Mentorship and access to high-level regulatory professionals

Note: Fellows are not employees of the National Academies and are not eligible for employee benefits.

Who Can Apply?

The fellowship is open to early-career professionals across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Hold an advanced degree in a relevant field
  • Have 3–5 years of professional experience

While familiarity with regulation and biotech is beneficial, passion and potential to contribute meaningfully to the field are most important.
