🚨 Big boost for global researchers! The ERC has doubled start-up funds (now up to €2M) for scientists moving to Europe, on top of standard grants. Kicks in with #ERC Advanced Grants opening 22 May.
Scientific freedom + funding muscle = 🔥
In a major move to attract world-class scientists, the European Research Council (ERC) has officially doubled its start-up funding for researchers relocating to Europe—from €1 million to €2 million. This boost applies from the ERC Advanced Grant competition opening on 22 May 2025, and will extend to Starting and Consolidator Grants as well.
Researchers from outside Europe—such as those relocating from the US—can now receive up to €4.5 million (Advanced Grants), €4 million (Consolidator Grants), or €3.5 million (Starting Grants) to launch their work in Europe. These funds cover lab setup, team building, and equipment procurement.
ERC President Maria Leptin emphasized that while the increase was in part to address challenges faced by US-based researchers, the opportunity is open globally. The decision aligns with the EU’s commitment to scientific freedom and excellence, ensuring all applicants compete on equal footing.
This update precedes a larger ERC transformation—plans for ‘super grants’ offering longer-term support were also announced by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, pointing to Europe’s growing appeal as a global science hub.
